The Department of Defense is weighing a strategy that would permit the military to launch airstrikes on the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the Philippines, NBC News reported on Monday.

The potential plan could be given a name as soon as Tuesday, the report said, and such strikes could be conducted with armed drones.

Capt. Jeff Davis, a spokesman for the Pentagon, told NBC that the U.S. has had a counterterrorism “presence in the Philippines for 15 years now.”

Militants who have pledged loyalty to ISIS have been fighting Philippines forces in Marawi since May.
