Federal data: 2013 seventh-hottest year on record thus far

The first 10 months of 2013 rank as the seventh warmest January-October stretch on record globally, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NOAA, citing records that date back to 1880, also reports that October was the seventh warmest on record.

And it has been quite a while since, on a global basis, temperatures were cooler than average, the agency said.

“The last below-average October global temperature was October 1976 and the last below-average global temperature for any month was February 1985,” NOAA said in its latest monthly temperature report.
