Biden: Europe needs to diversify energy

Vice President Biden called on European leaders Saturday to diversify their energy resources in an effort to better protect themselves from economic and national security threats.

"Now is the time to act," Biden said at a forum in Istanbul, the Associated Press reported. "We have been aware that this single source of energy has been a problem for a long time. But my message is not that Europe can or should do away with Russian imports."

Biden's remarks come as the administration and Western leaders have grown increasingly concerned about Russia President Vladimir Putin's recent aggressions against Ukraine, where Russian gas pipes connect energy resources to Europe.

Biden said in his remarks that his "message is not that Europe can or should do away with Russian imports."

"This is about energy security. To achieve it, Europe needs to ensure it diversifies,” said Biden, according to The AP. “Russia can and should be a player, but Russia has to play by the rules... We have been aware that this single source of energy has been a problem for a long time."
