Hurricane Dorian, a Category 1 storm, made landfall in the U.S. Friday, hitting North Carolina's Outer Banks.

The storm had maximum sustained winds near 90 miles per hour as of Friday morning as it struck Cape Hatteras, N.C.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) said Friday that hundreds of people were trapped on Ocracoke Island, which faced storm surge.

“There is significant concern about hundreds of people trapped on Ocracoke Island," he said at a briefing. "There are rescue teams ready as soon as they can get in."

Before impacting North Carolina, the storm killed at least 30 people when it hit the Bahamas.
