Dow clears 18,000 for first time

The Dow Jones Industrial Average exceeded 18,000 points for the first time in its 118-year history Tuesday.

The blue-chip stock index soared to a new all-time high in the first moments of trading, clearing the new threshold minutes after the government reported strong economic growth across the U.S. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 were also up on the news, with the latter hitting a new all-time high as well.

Earlier in the morning, the Commerce Department reported that the economy grew by 5 percent in the third quarter of the year, its fastest pace since 2014.
