The level of private layoffs were largely unchanged in June, although they ticked up slightly in the Northeast while declining in the South.

On Friday, the Labor Department reported that the economy added 163,000 jobs in July, nearly doubling the pace of the past three months and easily exceeding expectations. The government  also reported the unemployment rate climbed slightly from 8.2 percent to 8.3 percent.
