The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on Thursday afternoon restarted processing tax returns after a system outage was resolved, the agency said.

Several IRS systems, including its e-file system, had become unavailable because of the outage that began Wednesday afternoon. The agency said some of its tools had been restored Thursday morning.

{mosads}The IRS said that is still examining the underlying cause of the outage, but that it appears to have been due to a hardware failure.

“IRS teams worked throughout the night and around the clock on this system outage,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said.

“Our processing systems are back in business. Taxpayers should see little, if any, impact on their tax returns or refunds.”
