Ryan: Trump and House Republicans are not far apart on taxes

Greg Nash

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said Tuesday that he thinks that House Republicans and presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump have similar views on taxes.

House Republicans “feel very strongly about principles of tax reform, the goal of which is to lower tax rates, to get cronyism out of the tax code, to have comprehensive tax reform for families, small businesses, and to stop playing engineer in the code up here in Washington and let people keep more of their money and do what they want with it,”  Ryan said on “The Michael Medved Show.”

Trump “did put out a plan that did do this, so I don’t see that we’re real far apart on that,” Ryan (R-Wis.) added.

Ryan’s remarks come after Trump has gotten a lot of attention for comments he has made about tax cuts for the wealthy. In interviews airing over the weekend, the bilionaire said he was willing to negotiate on tax rates; he then clarified on Monday that any negotiations he made with Congress would still result in lower taxes for the rich. The tax plan Trump released in September would lower the top individual tax rate from 39.6 percent to 25 percent.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Ryan and other congressional Republicans on Capitol Hill on Thursday. Tax reform has been a top priority for Ryan, who was chairman of the House Ways and Means and Budget committees before becoming speaker last fall.

Ryan said that House Republicans are currently working on a tax reform blueprint.

“We think that’s the crown jewel of an economic growth package,” he said. “I think that is one thing that does animate and get all conservatives on the same page. That’s one of those policies coming from our principles that we believe can and should unify around and take to the country and I have every reason to believe we can do that.”
