Private sector adds 166,000 jobs in September

While part of the report may be ready to go, nearly all the staffers at the Bureau of Labor Statistics were furloughed as part of the shutdown, leaving no one to complete the compilation of the data.

It would be the first report since the Federal Reserve determined last month that the employment situation was not strong enough to warrant a tapering of its $85 billion in monthly monetary stimulus.

That could create problems for financial markets that use the report as a gauge for not only the health of the labor market but of the broader economy.

The weekly unemployment claims report is expected to come out on Thursday as scheduled, the Labor Department has said.

The ADP report showed that small businesses created 74,000 jobs, mid-size employers added 28,000 while larger firms, those with at least 500 employees hired 64,000. The bulk of the gains were in the service sector, which represents 90 percent of the workforce.
