Grover Norquist tries to clarify Bush tax cut remarks

Norquist also said taxes should not be part of the current talks over the debt ceiling and shot down the new proposal from the Gang of Six as likely a tax hike.

“The outlines of the plans are deliberately hazy, but it appears that both Obama’s Simpson-Bowles commission proposal and the Gang-of-Six proposal dramatically increase taxes on the American people,” the ATR said in its statement.

Some gang members have indicated that the Congressional Budget Office would score their plan as a $1.5 trillion tax cut, in large part because the office assumes non-permanent policies like the Bush tax cuts will expire.

But the Gang’s plan also states that it would like to raise $1 trillion through the tax code, a figure it reaches by, among other things, assuming that the Bush tax cuts for the vast majority of Americans are extended and that the Alternative Minimum Tax is patched.

On Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) also weighed in on the issue, saying that he would consider not extending the Bush cuts for the highest earners a tax increase.
