The National Retail Federation said in its annual report that it expects holiday sales to increase 3.6 percent this year, which the group believes will lead to 690,000 new seasonal jobs.

And Adobe Digital Insights says that it expects a surge in online sales, predicting online purchases to total $8.4 billion during the three most popular shopping days of the season.

The group expects $2 billion to be spent online on Thanksgiving Day, $3.05 billion on Black Friday and $3.36 billion on Cyber Monday.

Some analysts believe the shoppers are more inclined to spend money this year now that a long, bruising presidential campaign has been concluded.
