Ebola toll hits 1,069 in West Africa

The world's worst outbreak of the Ebola virus has killed 1,069 people in West Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported Wednesday.

The update reflects 56 new deaths as cases of the disease worsen in Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria. A total of 1,975 cases have been confirmed since March.

The news comes as the WHO and U.S. officials grapple with how best to fight the widening outbreak.

A WHO panel ruled this week that the use of experimental drugs and vaccines is justified to help victims and promised to issue guidance by the end of the month.

Still, supplies of trial medicines are short and it could take months to produce even the smallest of new batches, according to federal health workers.
