Senate Democrats are calling on President Trump to allow the government to negotiate lower prices for a drug that reverses opioid overdoses. 

The cost of Evzio, the Democrats say, has increased from $690 in 2015 to $4,500 for a two-pack today as the opioid crisis has grown. 

“The opioid epidemic now claims 142 deaths per day, and it is still getting worse,” 18 Senate Democrats, including Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) and Cory Booker (N.J.), wrote in a letter to Trump Wednesday.

Evzio is a naloxone auto-injector used in hospitals and emergency rooms and by first responders to revive victims and restart their breathing after an overdose. 

Democrats are asking Trump to allow the Health and Human Services Department to negotiate reduced pricing for all government units.

“By doing so, you can put this life-saving medication in the hands of more people and save lives,” the Democrats said. 

“We hope the policy will be the first step towards substantial action to bring down the cost of all drugs through negotiation and other policies, and part of a comprehensive emergency declaration that includes the investments needed to end the epidemic.”

The request comes as Trump is expected to declare the opioid crisis a national emergency on Thursday.
