First coronavirus death reported in Thailand
Thailand reported its first death Sunday of a patient infected with coronavirus.
The 35-year-old patient had first been admitted to a private hospital for dengue fever on Jan. 27 and was later diagnosed with coronavirus and transferred on Feb. 5 to the government’s main treatment center, Reuters reported, citing Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoen, director-general of the Department of Disease Control.
“This was a case of local transmission, and he was at risk because he had exposure to Chinese tourists,” Suwanchai reportedly said at a news conference.
The man who died worked in the retail sector and came into contact with many tourists during the early stages of the coronavirus outbreak, Retuers reported citing health officials said.
The patient reportedly died late Saturday from multiple organ failure.
Thailand has 42 recorded cases of the virus since January, with 30 recovering and 11 being treated in hospital, according Reuters which cited the health department.
