More Republicans wearing masks outside home: poll

More self-identified Republicans say in a new poll that they are wearing masks “all the time” outside their homes,  although the percentage is still smaller than among Democrats or independents.

Axios-Ipsos polling found increased percentages of Republicans, Democrats and independents who report mask usage “all the time” when away from home. Republicans reported the largest increase, from 35 percent at the end of June to 45 percent. The share of Democrats increased from 71 percent to 78 percent, while independents went from 52 percent to 58 percent.

The share of respondents overall saying they wear masks all the time outside the home also increased, from 53 percent two weeks ago to 62 percent, the survey found.

A partisan divide on masks persists, but has narrowed, with 95 percent of Democrats saying they wear a mask most of the time or always outdoors, while 74 percent of Republicans said the same.

About a third of those who say they only wear a mask sometimes — 32 percent — said they have been told they could not enter a business without a face covering, while 21 percent said someone has told them to put one on. Fifteen percent of respondents said they have told someone else to put one on, according to the poll.

However, even as nearly every state reports an increase in cases and several, including California, Texas, Oklahoma and Florida, experience major outbreaks, a much smaller percentage of respondents are engaging in other mitigation measures, the survey found. Only 19 percent of Americans say they self-quarantined over the last week, the lowest level since early March, and 47 percent said they visited relatives or friends in the past week.

Pollsters also noted that 33 percent of Americans said they perceived going to large gatherings as a health risk, and another 37 percent said they considered dining out a major risk.

The survey of 1,063 adults, conducted from July 10 to July 13, has a margin of error between 3.1 and 3.4 percentage points.
