South Korea's Defense Ministry said the launch happened near the city of Sinpo, an apparent hub of ballistic missile activity in the North, the Associated Press reported.

It was not immediately known where the projectile landed.

North Korea had upped its military activity in recent weeks, as the South and the U.S. engaged in annual military drills. In addition, Pyongyang has faced increased sanctions of late for its efforts to build a nuclear weapon and long-range rockets.
