Hundreds of protesters stormed the Baghdad’s Green Zone on Saturday, pushing into Iraq’s parliament building, Reuters reported.
The protesters are supporters of Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. They were chanting “The cowards ran away,” apparently referring to lawmakers not convening for a vote on new cabinet ministers.
The group has been gathered for weeks at the Green Zone gates, pushing for government reform.
The demonstrators rushed into the restricted area after al-Sadr spoke. He slammed the government gridlock, but did not call on supporters to move forward, according to AFP.
“You are not staying here! This is your last day in the Green Zone,” one protester reportedly shouted. Protesters sought to block Green Zone exits, keeping lawmakers from escaping the area.
