The threat of a missile attack from North Korea put Japan and South Korea on high alert Monday, according to media reports.

The Japanese military has prepared for the possibility of North Korea firing a ballistic missile after detecting evidence of launch preparation, Reuters reported. The military is standing by with anti-ballistic missile batteries prepared to shoot down incoming artillery.

South Korea has also elevated its threat level, military officials said.

The alert comes as North Korea has attracted scrutiny this year for testing missiles and nuclear weapons on multiple occasions.
