Twenty-five militants were killed by the air operation, four by the following ground operationand another 8 were killed in a Hakkari’s Cukurca district several hours earlier.

The militants are suspected members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) who have been engaging with government forces along the southern border.

Turkey is currently undergoing large-scale military reforms, with nearly 40 percent of admirals and generals being dismissed since the military coup on July 15. It is possible that Kurdish separatists were trying to take advantage of disarray within the armed forces.

According to Reuters, nearly 40,000 people have been killed in conflict with PKK since 1984.
