The Iraqi parliament has approved a "reciprocity measure" in response to President Trump's executive order barring refugees and people from seven predominately Muslim countries, including Iraq, from entering the U.S.

The measure will apply to Americans entering Iraq, The Associated Press reported.

It is not yet clear to whom exactly the measure will apply.

The move comes after Trump on Friday signed an executive order calling for a 90-day ban on people from seven predominately Muslim countries from entering the U.S.

The order also includes a 120-day halt on admitting refugees and an indefinite pause on admitting refugees from Syria.

The president on Sunday released a statement amid protests and backlash stressing the importance of keeping the country safe and denying his executive order constituted a Muslim ban.

"America is a proud nation of immigrants and we will continue to show compassion to those feeling oppression, but we will do so while protecting our own citizens and border," the president said in the statement.

"We will keep it free and keep it safe, as the media knows, but refuses to say."

During his presidential campaign, Trump called for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."
