North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday dubbed his country's nuclear weapons program a "powerful deterrent" that guarantees its sovereignty, according to state media cited by Reuters.

Kim's comments came hours after President Trump took to Twitter to dismiss a diplomatic approach to the crisis on the Korean Peninsula.

"Presidents and their administrations have been talking to North Korea for 25 years, agreements made and massive amounts of money paid hasn't worked, agreements violated before the ink was dry, makings fools of U.S. negotiators," Trump wrote on Saturday.

"Sorry, but only one thing will work!" he added.

Relations between Washington and Pyongyang have deteriorated in recent weeks.

North Korea has launched a series of intercontinental ballistic missiles, prompting the United Nations Security Council to impose additional sanctions on the reclusive nation.

Trump threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea during a speech at the U.N. last month, prompting Pyongyang's foreign minister to threaten to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean.
