The photo was posted to Merkel’s official Instagram account, with a caption describing it as a “spontaneous meeting between two working sessions.”

The photo comes amid growing tensions between Trump, Merkel and other G-7 leaders over trade disputes. While speaking Saturday at the summit, Trump threatened other leaders that if they do not reduce trade barriers, the U.S. is "not going to deal" with them.

Social media users quickly shared Merkel’s photo, with many suggesting the photo portrayed tension between the two leaders. Trump is sitting with his arms crossed in the photo, while Merkel, standing and leaning on a table, looks down at him.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is also standing with his arms crossed, and Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton can be seen in the photo.
