Pompeo said in an interview broadcast Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Trump would be willing to meet with Rouhani at the United Nations General Assembly, which began Monday in New York City.

"I think the president's been pretty clear about that. He's happy to talk with folks at any time," Pompeo said.

But Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Monday that he will not meet with Trump during the UN session, citing sanctions that Trump has reimposed on Iran.

Trump on Tuesday wrote on Twitter that he has no plans to meet with Rouhani at the UN, despite what he called  "requests."

"Despite requests, I have no plans to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani," Trump tweeted. "Maybe someday in the future. I am sure he is an absolutely lovely man!"
