Controversy erupts in UK after Corbyn accused of calling Theresa May a 'stupid woman'

U.K. opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn is facing backlash after video appeared to show him calling Prime Minister Theresa May a “stupid woman.”

Cameras show Corbyn mouthing something while May spoke before Parliament during her Prime Minister’s Questions Wednesday.

The alleged comments from Corbyn came as May was criticizing him for his attempt to call a no-confidence vote in her.

The remark was not picked up by microphones, and Corbyn insists he said “stupid people,” a Labour Party spokesman told CNN.

"Corbyn's comment was to the wider situation in the House of Commons and its pantomime-type behavior,” the spokesman said. "He has no time for any misogynistic abuse."

The alleged insult drew widespread criticism, with Deputy Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly saying,“this kind of misogynistic language must not be tolerated” in a post on Twitter.

For her part, May said Corbyn “should be aiming to encourage women to come into this chamber."
