Arizona Republican calls on Biden to revoke John Kerry’s security clearance

Arizona GOP Rep. Andy Biggs on Tuesday asked President Biden to revoke the security clearance of special envoy for climate John Kerry after allegations that Kerry revealed Israeli military secrets to Iran.

The Biden administration has defended Kerry, saying he discussed facts that were widely known at the time, and Kerry denied he had ever revealed Israeli secrets, “either when I was secretary of State or since.”

The allegations were made public in a recording of Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who in a conversation last month with economist Saeed Leylaz said Kerry had informed him that Israel had attacked Iranian assets in Syria at least 200 times.

Republican reactions to reports of Zarif’s recollection of the events have varied from calls for Kerry to resign, to calls for an investigation.

In his letter, Biggs asks for revocation of Kerry’s security clearance, an extraordinary measure for a former secretary of state.

“If Mr. Kerry provided sensitive information to Iran about Israel’s activities in Syria, he undermined a friend and bolstered an enemy. At best, such behavior would be despicable; at worst, it would verge on treason,” wrote Biggs.

In the recording, Zarif said he was “astonished” by Kerry’s revelations.

“And the American people should be astonished as well,” wrote Biggs, adding that “Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.”

Biggs, an outspoken House conservative, also asked Biden to conduct a fuller investigation into the allegations against Kerry.
