“We urge the U.S. to stop bolstering radical violent forces in Hong Kong that advocate Hong Kong independence, and stop intensifying words and actions that undermine the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong,” foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said during a daily briefing.
Amid reports that the U.S. House will advance a bill requiring an annual review of Hong Kong’s special economic and trade status, Geng warned the U.S. against interfering in what he said was an internal Chinese affair.
“We strongly urge the U.S. to ... respect China’s sovereignty, stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs in any form and stop promoting the review of relevant Hong Kong-related proposals,” he said, according to the AP.
Pelosi appeared at a news conference Wednesday with Republican lawmakers and Hong Kong activists, including Joshua Wong, who was arrested in late August before being released shortly thereafter.
The protests erupted in Hong Kong in June after Chief Executive Carrie Lam introduced a bill that would have allowed certain residents to be extradited to China.
The bill has since been formally withdrawn but protesters have continued demanding Lam’s resignation while calling for an independent probe into police brutality against demonstrators.
