Assailants with baseball bats severely beat a man inside a laundromat near Paris after he requested one of them wear a face covering to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Bloomberg reported that the victim, a 44-year-old man known only as Augustin, told France's La Parisien newspaper about the attack, which occurred in the town of Soisy-sous-Montmorency, just north of Paris, on Sunday.

"I had a mask, I asked this person to put on his mask," he said, according to the AP. "He acted as if he didn't hear, I insisted. He called his brother or his cousin or someone he knew who was outside ... they were threatening, insulting."

Everyone must wear masks when inside public places, according to the French government's pandemic measures.

At the scene, a surveillance camera captured footage showing at least four men entering the building, approaching the man, and hitting him repeatedly until he falls on the ground and continuing to beat him as he lay face down.

The beating left the man with trauma to the head and bruising along his upper body, causing him to miss work for nearly a week.

Authorities have been alerted to the incident, although it is unclear whether the footage revealed any leads with regard to the attackers' identities.
