Man arrested for planning 'hostile act' against US embassy in Cairo: report

A 24-year-old man who was allegedly "planning to use flammable chemical material" in a "hostile act" against the U.S. embassy in Cairo was arrested Tuesday.

A security source tells CNN that the man was carrying a bag which caught fire. It was later learned that the bag contained a plastic bottle with flammable material.

"The man harbors extremist ideology, according to initial examination," the source told CNN.

No casualties or damages were reported.

“We are aware of a reported incident on Simon Bolivar Street in Cairo. Please avoid the area and monitor local media for updates. We are aware of reports that public transportation near the area has been disrupted due to the incident. Please exercise caution,” the embassy tweeted Tuesday.

The embassy returned to normal business shortly after.

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.
