Overnight Defense & National Security — White House raises new alarm over Russia
Ex-CIA director defends Clapper, tells Trump 'Your hypocrisy knows no bounds'
Former CIA Director John Brennan spoke out against President Trump on Twitter Saturday afternoon after the president called former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper a "lying machine."
Brennan, who served alongside Clapper under former President Obama, defended his former colleague as a "man of integrity, honesty, ethics, & morality."
"Mr. Trump: Your hypocrisy knows no bounds. Jim Clapper is a man of integrity, honesty, ethics, & morality. You are not. Jim Clapper served his country for over a half century, including in Vietnam. You did not. By your words & behavior, you diminish the Office of the Presidency," he tweeted.
Trump attacked Clapper on Twitter Saturday morning after a Republican report released Friday by members of the House Intelligence Committee stated that Clapper had discussed the bombshell "Steele dossier" about Trump and Russia with CNN reporters, including anchor Jake Tapper, in 2017.
Clapper had previously "flatly denied" leaking the contents of the dossier, but ultimately admitted to discussing the dossier with Tapper and other journalists shortly before Trump's inauguration in January 2017, the report states.
"Clapper's discussion with Tapper took place in 'early January 2017,' around the time [intelligence officials] briefed President Obama and President-elect Trump, on 'the Christopher Steele information,'" the document notes.
Clapper and Brennan have been vocal critics of the president, joining other former members of the Obama administration in lambasting Trump on social media. Clapper joined CNN as a network contributor in August 2017.
