Web traffic: Obama’s reelection site draws more than GOP hopefuls combined

President Obama’s reelection website drew more voting-age visitors in January 2012 than those of his four Republican challengers combined.

That’s according to Nielsen Media Research, which in a new report found that Obama’s reelection website had 4.2 million unique visitors over age 18 in January. By comparison, the campaign websites for Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney had a combined total of about 2.9 million unique voting-age visitors in the same time period. 

Broken down individually:

  • Ron Paul’s site had 830,000 visitors
  • Mitt Romney’s site had 773,000 visitors
  • Rick Santorum’s site had 696,000 visitors
  • Newt Gingrich’s site had 609,000 visitors

{mosads}Sixty percent of the visitors to Santorum’s site in January were women, the largest percentage among any candidate in the race, including Obama, who had 58.6 percent. Those numbers don’t necessarily mean the visitors supported Santorum or Obama but it does suggest that a large portion of people interested in learning more about Santorum were women.

Paul dominated among male visitors with 56 percent of visitors to his site, followed by Gingrich at 51 percent. 

Paul also led the rest of the field for largest percentage (36.8 percent) of visitors age 18-34. Obama had the lowest percentage — 17.1 percent of his visitors were in the 18-34 age bracket. Those numbers are surprising given young voters were a key constituency for Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. 

Instead, the highest percentage for Obama’s website was visitors between age 50 and 64. They made up 34.6 percent of total visitors according to Nielsen.
