Report: Apple sells a million iPad 2s

Stores across the nation sold out of their initial shipments of iPad 2s, according to reports from several market research firms.

Analysts from Deutsche Bank and Piper Jaffray were unable to find any of the updated editions of the ubiquitous tablets, which went on sale Friday, despite contacting retailers nationwide. Analysts told Reuters they could see Apple clearing one million units in the opening weekend.

Rival firms including Google and Microsoft are touting their own tablet offerings as competition in the growing market heats up this year, but these latest sales figure reiterate Apple's commanding lead in the sector. Apple sold more than 15 million first-generation iPads and has attracted thousands of app developers.

Apple shares were up half a percentage point in Monday's trading, while the broader NASDAQ was down 0.67 percent on the day at the time of this post.
