Industry groups join together to pressure House on immigration

The letter is signed by industry groups from each corner of the United States, which is intended to show the wide support for passing immigration legislation. The letter also takes the strategic approach of not advocating for any specific immigration solution, and instead stresses the importance that immigration reform will have on the economy.

“Today, the problems with our immigration system have grown and multiplied to become an emerging threat to the current and future productivity, ingenuity, and competitiveness of key sectors of our economy, including agriculture, housing, manufacturing, retail, hospitality, tourism, engineering and technology,” the letter says.

{mosads}Industry groups also plan to keep up the drumbeat of the pro-immigration message when House members are back in their home districts.

The path forward on immigration is still unclear in the House, which has moved more slowly on tackling the issue than the Senate. The upper chamber passed a sweeping immigration bill by a bipartisan group of eight senators last month, which has received lukewarm reviews in the House.

Members of the Gang of Eight met with representatives from a range of industries and religious groups in the Capitol earlier this month to encourage them to keep the pressure up on the House to take action.

“We respect the House process and we want to keep the momentum going as people head out of town and show that there’s broad support for immigration reform,” said Dan Turrentine, vice president for government relations and business development at TechNet, a tech trade association that helped organize the coalition letter. “But we respect their process and we respect that they’re going to consider this issue in their own way, as they should.”
