FCC chairman addresses Baker's departure

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski said he is not concerned about the potential appearance of impropriety arising from Republican Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker's planned departure from the agency to join Comcast/NBC Universal.

He told reporters Thursday that there are rules to govern such situations, and that Baker consulted with the general counsel to ensure she is following them. He said the rules are successfully meeting their intended effect.

Telecom reform group Free Press released a statement Wednesday slamming the commissioner for her decision. She had voted to approve the merger of Comcast and NBCU, and gave a speech in March arguing that the review took too long.
