Facebook hits 2 billion monthly users

Facebook announced on Tuesday that it now has 2 billion users visiting its site every month.

“As of this morning, the Facebook community is now officially 2 billion people!” CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post. “We're making progress connecting the world, and now let's bring the world closer together.”

The milestone comes as the company grapples with a number of controversies related to its platform and scrutiny from regulators in Europe.

Facebook has launched an effort to improve its public image. Last week, Zuckerberg announced that the company’s new mission statement is to "give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together."

In its first-quarter earnings report, Facebook revealed that it had 1.94 billion monthly active users, a 17 percent increase from the previous year. Of that number, 1.28 billion were daily active users.
