Facebook made a streamlined version of its app, called Facebook Lite, available in the U.S. on Thursday.

The pared-down version of Facebook is currently available in 100 countries, and was created in 2015 with the intention of serving regions that have slower internet and less access to data.

The app is available only for Android phones.

It will also now be available in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland and New Zealand.

"To help everyone have a great Facebook experience regardless of where they connect or the bandwidth they have, in many countries we rolled out Facebook Lite as a standalone, native app with features such as News Feed, status updates, push notifications, and camera/photo integration," the company said in a statement provided to CNET.

Earlier in the year, Twitter launched its own similar “Twitter Lite” app in 24 countries.
