A bug affecting 800,000 Facebook users briefly unblocked people they had barred from contacting them, the company revealed Monday.

Erin Egan, Facebook’s chief privacy officer, wrote in a blog post that the social network would start notifying the affected users.

“We know that the ability to block someone is important — and we’d like to apologize and explain what happened,” Egan wrote.

While it was active between May 29 and June 5, the bug allowed unblocked users to contact the people who blocked them through Messenger. It also would have shown the unblocked users content shared publicly or widely by the other party.

Egan said that the issue has now been fixed and all of the block settings have been restored. Users who severed friendships with people they blocked did not see those friendships reinstated, she added.
