Transportation advocates press for multiyear highway bill

"Without the certainty of a multi-year bill, current problems are harder to solve as highway and transit conditions worsen and land, labor and materials get more expensive," the letter continued.

Lawmakers in each chamber have proposed long-term extensions of the highway funding, but they have produced vastly different plans. The House has proposed a six-year, $235 billion bill, while the Senate has suggested a two-year, $109 billion bill.

Advocates generally like the length of the House proposal, but they favor the Senate's higher annual spending levels.
