Garage doors are coming under new scrutiny from federal regulators.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Tuesday proposed new safety standards for automatic residential garage door operators.

The entrapment protection standards are intended to protect consumers, particularly young children, from getting stuck in partially open garage doors. The rules would apply to both vertically and horizontally opening garage doors.

The garage door standards were first issued in 1991, but this is the first time the CPSC is updating the rules since 2007.

The public has 75 days to comment.
