The National Confectioners Association is the pre-eminent advocacy organization in Washington representing the companies that make chocolate, candy, gum and mints, as well as suppliers and brokers across the U.S. NCA fosters industry growth by advancing and promoting the interests of the confectionery industry, its customers and its consumers.

Position Overview

The Public Affairs Manager will write, edit and proofread communications materials including news releases, statements, speeches, op-eds, industry communications, design copy, web content, and occasionally social media content. The position will manage a broad range of issues and projects in coordination with the Vice President of Public Affairs & Communications, including recruiting, educating, and activating third parties to engage on issues that impact the industry. The Public Affairs Manager will provide media relations for the association within a specified issues set, and distill complex topics into comprehensive, easily understandable communications materials intended for multiple audiences.

This position will report to the Vice President of Public Affairs & Communications.


- Support NCA’s public affairs and communications operations by writing and editing high-quality internal and external communications materials, including traditional media correspondence, news releases, statements, speeches, op-eds, design copy, and web and social media content as needed.

- Serve as the communication team lead or other critical role in on-going and ad hoc legislative and regulatory priority projects.

- Serve as an association spokesperson.

- Build relationships with and position NCA as a strategic partner with media organizations, industry audiences, colleague organizations, and other external audiences.

- Develop a content swapping strategy with partner organizations.

- Create original content for and serve in an advisory capacity for the industry publication staff of writers.

- Provide final editorial review of communications materials and association correspondence.

- Ensure consistency of format and messaging across all communications materials.

- Coordinate and develop communications materials and documents by working closely across NCA’s disciplines.

- Contribute to the implementation of public affairs and communications programs.


- 5-7 years of relevant experience on Capitol Hill, in an agency, or in related political/issues management communications.

- Impeccable writing, editing and proofreading skills.

- Self-starter with a strong desire to excel in a performance-driven culture.

- Experience as an on-the-record spokesperson.

- Familiarity with beltway and national media.

- Strong organizational and time-management skills.

- Ability to pay close attention to detail.

- Knowledge of the changing media landscape and an understanding of how to write for different platforms and audiences.

- Excellent communications skills.

- Creative thinker.

- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field.

- Comfortable engaging / interacting with executives.
