JOB SUMMARY

This position leads the development of strategic media relations plans, strategy, and execution for the largest electric utility in Texas. It requires positive relationships and interaction with news media on corporate events and utility trends as well as developing corporate positioning on external affairs and other public affairs issues. This interaction includes coordinating verbal and written media responses with the Communications Team, on-camera interviews and input on other company communications. This position serves as the primary on-camera spokesperson for the company and is responsible for the planning, direction and execution of regular media relations training. This role is also responsible for the periodic review and update of Oncor media messaging and for the planning, direction and execution of all proactive and reactive outreach efforts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. In this position, either directly or through others, the incumbent will:


MEDIA RELATIONS
• Actively plan, propose and manage a comprehensive proactive media relations program that drives effective stakeholder communication. This includes shareholders, customers, employees and others.
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with appropriate members of the media and key media influencers across a large service territory.
• Serve as an official on-the-record spokesperson, coordinating and providing rapid and accurate responses to a wide range of media inquiries by phone, email and in person.
• Serve as the primary on-camera spokesperson for the company.
• Develop proactive / reactive media plans and calendars, and then execute plans accordingly.
• Participate in internal working groups and prepare and distribute press releases, memos, talking points and interview responses.
• Develop and nurture internal and external relationships to support positive communication.
• Develop and update media lists for print, broadcast, and digital.
• Develop media kits, timelines, and fact sheets for internal and external stakeholders.
• Effectively implement day-to-day communications operations, including scheduling and facilitating media interviews and coordinating press conferences.
• Manage all reporter visits to Oncor headquarters and facilities – including preparing briefing and logistics materials.
• Coordinate pitching reporters, producers and editors on stories and pieces that contribute to the overall communications strategy of the company.

COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY AND CRISIS RESPONSE

• Advise and counsel Communications and senior management on external implications of corporate positioning.
• Develop and execute comprehensive communication plans on issues with the potential to enhance public perception of Oncor. This includes effective stakeholder communication with shareholders, customers, employees, social media and others.
• Review and update company messaging to ensure timely and accurate responses.
• Collaborate with the communications team during crisis events to ensure tactics are aligned with long-term communications objectives.


TEAM LEADERSHIP & STAFF DEVELOPMENT

• Encourage collaboration and creativity with team members on messaging and professional development opportunities.
• Mentor junior staff and manage proactive pitch and media response efforts of junior team members.
• Develop and plan all Oncor media relations training.

OTHER

• Promote the brand by demonstrating a strong sense of Oncor’s voice and culture, and be knowledgeable about Oncor’s core business as well as the broader electric utility industry.
• Develop, write, edit and post articles for brand journalism website, “The Wire.”
Track electric utility trends, and monitor coverage of Oncor and similar companies.
• Knowledge of and positive presence in social and emerging media.
• Perform other job-related duties as requested.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
Minimal background and knowledge requirements:
Qualifications sought in successful candidates include the following:
• Demonstrated strategic judgment, rapid issue assessment and ability to work under tight deadlines.
• On camera experience required.
• Corporate crisis communications experience required.
• Proven track record of corporate communications excellence in media relations, team building, and effective handling of high-profile issues.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
• College degree and experience equivalent to 7-10 years in media, media relations, public relations or related field preferred; 2 years minimum experience in the area of external affairs, or public affairs communications preferred.
• Energy experience or experience in the Texas electric market preferred.
• Experience working in, or with, a large company preferred.

Preferred background and knowledge requirements:
• Demonstrated superior writing, editing, oral and presentation communication skills
• Extensive media interview experience and background
• Knowledge of news media operations and relationship building
• Significant crisis communications experience
• Proven expertise in creating news opportunities
• Knowledge of energy and/or competitive businesses
• Research and application of trends/issues to news
• Existing positive relationships with news media
• Proven on camera experience / expertise
• Bilingual skills beneficial
• Financial or business acumen beneficial
• Supervisory experience beneficial

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: This position requires the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities in the following environment:
• Consistent long, irregular hours
• Periodically on call 24 hours / 7 days a week
• Responding to media after-hours while also working days (on a rotational basis)
• Use of a personal computer, computer terminal and/or telephone more than 2 hours a day
