Title: Director of Communications and Media Relations

Basic Functions:

Primary responsibility is to ensure effective communications with both external policymakers and internal industry stakeholders and to initiate a communications program to ensure the environmental, economic and energy security benefits of propane compared to other energy sources are understood by policymakers. Experience developing a thought leadership campaign to influence consumers and policy makers in their perceptions of propane as an energy source. Additional duties include communications, marketing, and branding for the association to include producing and distributing weekly newsletters, brochures, and other association publications and e-publications. Responsible for content management of association’s website and other public relations and media communications. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Initiate a communications offensive directed at energy thought leaders on the essential benefits of the direct use of propane gas.
• Broaden the scope of our communications program to increase member awareness of NPGA priorities and progress. (90-day criticals, mid-range and long term goals)
• Work in tandem with PERC and state association partners to ensure that the messages and products we develop and disseminate are done in a fully integrated manner.
• Organize press conferences and media events.
• Pitch story ideas to energy and natural resources reporters and publications.
• Position the association as a go-to source for quotations and background information.
• Draft statements, releases, speeches, opinion editorials, and responses to articles.
• Propose innovative programs to increase the association’s visibility.
• Direct communications, marketing and branding for the association.
• Responsible for the production and distribution of weekly newsletter, including organizing content, writing and editing copy, proofing, and disseminating electronically to the membership.
• Manage content development, maintenance and relevance of the association’s website and other electronic communications technology, including implementation of a social networking strategy.
• Assist with designing and editing promotional and educational materials for the association’s annual tradeshow and meetings.
• Assisting with the development of an effective marketing strategy for member recruitment and retention; compile copy and oversee production of all print materials, including correspondence, mailings, and list exchanges in collaboration with the Membership Department.
• Prepare content for annual report, strategic plan updates, state association magazines and trade press articles; ensure individual staff responsibilities related to content are communicated effectively, deadlines are met and all participants in the process are appropriately informed and updated.
• Coordinate communications from NPGA leadership to the membership, including letters, speeches, editorials and industry fact sheets.
• Communicate national association goals and industry issues.
• Oversee relationships and serve as point person to outside vendors including printers, marketing firm, technology vendors, etc.
• Assist with the budgeting and evaluation of marketing and promotional expenditures.
• Develop and distribute annual membership and meeting surveys; compile responses and analyze results.
• Provide writing and editing support for projects from other departments, including meetings, membership, government relations, etc.
• Receive and respond to general inquiries via phone and email.
• Perform other duties as directed by the President and CEO.


• Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, English, Political Science or a related field.
• Minimum of five years’ experience in media relations.
• Experience as a congressional press secretary highly desirable.
• Must have extensive media contacts.
• Experience in crisis communications.
• Excellent written, editing and verbal communication skills, including the ability to master complex issues and convey information clearly to varied audiences.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet strict deadlines.
• Must be highly motivated and team-oriented.
• Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
• Solid computer experience, including a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office; technical proficiency in database management and website software.
• Design experience with desktop publishing software, specifically Adobe Creative Suite.
