Title: Vice President, Communications

Classification: Exempt, Executive

Reporting Relationships: Reports to President &CEO

General Position Responsibilities: Advance NSSGA’s internal and external communication strategies to support the mission and vision of the association, as well as achievement of the goals & objectives identified in the association’s strategic plan. As a key member of the association’s executive team, the VP will work collaboratively across departments to advance NSSGA’s legislative and regulatory agenda and maintain consistent and effective lines of communication and brand messaging with all relevant stakeholders. The position is responsible for promoting, enhancing, and protecting the value of the aggregates as well as driving broader awareness and support. The VP is responsible for all member communications products and services including print publications, e-news, social media; media and public relations; and is a strong writer who draft board communications, speeches, op-eds and will serve as spokesperson for the association.

Specific Duties:

• Leads the NSSGA Communications Division to implement strategic communications, media relations, brand management and social media supporting the association’s strategic plan.
• Serve as staff liaison to NSSGA’s Communications Committee.
• Develops and maintains key media relations inside and outside the beltway, as well as, with consumer and industry media, legislative and regulatory media, as it relates to the construction materials and transportation industry sectors.
• Develops talking points, media kits, media releases and advisory materials for local, regional and national events involving NSSGA.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders and co-lead the oversight of association’s website its integrated platforms with the VP of Membership & Meetings.
• Coordinates the Association’s message between divisions to ensure clear and consistent messaging and branding.
• Advises NSSGA officers and executives on communications policy, strategy and tactics.
• Analyzes, creates, leverages and monitors media opportunities that can be utilized to promote the construction materials advocacy agenda.
• Oversees the production and coordination of member publications, including Stone, Sand & Gravel REVIEW and NSSGA Digital Aggregate, annual report and membership directory. Liaise with appropriate vendors as needed.
• Serves as the Association’s first point of contact for news media and serves as the spokesperson for NSSGA.
• Manages content development and delivery of social media on a variety of platforms to include Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
• Oversees the overall Annual Awards Program with direct management of the Stars of Excellence and Community Relations awards programs.
• Prepares speeches, op-eds, articles and testimony for association officers and executives.
• Prepares or oversees preparation of scripts (program and video) for major association meetings and events (Annual Convention, Executive Committee, Legislative & Policy Forum).
• Attends and reports at the triannual Officer, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors’ meetings.
• Serves as the joint staff liaison with the VP, Membership & Meetings to the Rocks Build America Foundation and to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.
• Represents NSSGA at public speaking opportunities at industry and non-industry forums.
• Supervises a staff of three.
• Other duties as assigned by President & CEO.

Background/Education Requirements:

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field.

Experience Requirements:

Minimum of eight to ten years in public relations, public affairs, public policy, journalism or related field with a demonstrated record of advocacy success. Must have experience with media relations, constituent/member communications, and social media. Speechwriting experience is a plus.

Technical Skills:

Superior written communication and editing skills. Excellent organizational skills. Effective oral and written communicator to a broad constituency. Strong computer proficiency with Advanced Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook skills. Familiarity with web-based tools and an ability to quickly learn project management and CRM platforms.
