Director, Advocacy

AWEA is seeking a Director, Advocacy. This position will work closely with AWEA’s Public Affairs, Policy and Regulatory Affairs, State Affairs, Federal Affairs, and Research and Analytics teams. The Director, Advocacy will develop, direct, and manage advocacy campaigns at the federal, state, and local-level including the hiring and management of state consultants while overseeing grassroots recruitment, engagement, and activation. Developing strategies through engaging and mobilizing AWEA member company employees, wind stakeholders, and AWEA members for effective community engagement will be key in developing an “influencer” network to enhance AWEA’s ability to mobilize external, grassroots/grasstops support; and will also establish and leverage strategic partnerships with various regional, state, and national coalitions, advocacy organizations, and decision-maker organizations to advance AWEA’s mission.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

♣ Recognizing emerging public affairs opportunities and threats and develop recommendations for addressing them.
♣ Developing advocacy strategies and oversee day-to-day management of field teams and campaigns designed to achieve AWEA public affairs and policy objectives including the hiring and management of state-based consultants.
♣ Growing a system (including AWEA database and member participation) to build, nurture and retain state-focused grasstops support and communication, tracking effectiveness and tailoring messages to audiences.
♣ Identifying and involving existing wind industry influencers for policy and messaging efforts, including rural and supply chain companies.
♣ Developing strategies for expanding AWEA’s grassroots network and increase overall mobilization rates including: overseeing the recruitment, education, engagement and mobilization of grasstops; moving grassroots supporters up the advocacy ladder developing Wind Champions in key Congressional and state districts; enhancing AWEA employee training and mobilizations.

This job may experience high work demands under tight timelines. Extensive travel will be required.

Education and/or Experience

Qualified applicants may possess any combination of education and experience enabling them to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position. Preferred qualifications are: bachelor’s degree, with at least ten years of progressively responsible experience and an established ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, establish priorities, meet deadlines, and solve problems as they arise. Seeking candidates with public policy and strong communications experience, ideally with energy and/or environmental policy and issues. Incumbent should be able to coordinate and oversee grassroots and grasstops mobilization campaigns. Additional consideration given to candidates with strong, nation-wide network of contacts in the politics and public affairs and established coalition-building skills. Candidates must possess exceptional written and oral communications skills, with an emphasis on the ability to achieve consensus and cooperation among people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Sound judgment and instincts, good analytical, conceptual and strategic thinking skills, the ability to develop and manage projects independently, the ability to adapt and respond quickly to change will play as factors in the selection for this role.
