Deputy Director of Communications
Job Description

The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, a 501c4 trade association engaged in improving the quality and effectiveness of public utility regulation, is looking for a Deputy Director of Communications responsible for assisting in strategic communications, media relations, and marketing for the Association.

Reporting Relationship
This position reports to the Director of Communications

Education and Experience
• Minimum of 5-7 years of related professional communications experience, including but not limited to Association work, nonpartisan advocacy, trade or general press background, public relations
• Bachelor’s degree in related field
• Experience and/or extensive knowledge in energy and utility regulation is a plus.
• Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities
Media Relations
• Serve as a backup for fielding press calls
• Help manage the media monitoring platform
• Update press lists
• Write press releases and other Association statements
• Actively engage in media pitching
• Monitor presence in traditional and social media and help manage media clips

Writing and Editing
• Write articles for the biweekly newsletter
• Proofread final newsletter layout
• Assist in maintaining and updating style guides
• Edit articles/reports drafted by other staff
• Help develop, write, and solicit content for future Association publications

Web & Social Media
• Manage social media accounts
• Add/edit web content
• Write/edit blog posts
• Co-manage contractual staff/interns as needed

Public Affairs and Education
• Assist with Association’s education campaign
• Provide campaign updates to commissioners and state PIOs, as needed
• Write content and provide strategic analysis and advice

Project Management
• Track projects from inception to completion
• Prepare production schedules
• Meet with internal clients for project meetings

Marketing and Promotion
• Assist Meetings Department in promoting three national meetings
• Help ensure the integrity of branding guidelines and assist with any re-branding efforts
• Prepare e-blasts for NARUC and partner events

This position manages the Web and Graphic Designer
Other duties as assigned


Required Abilities and Key Attributes
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Able to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
• Strong interpersonal skills to respond quickly and respectfully to members’ needs and press requests
• Able to travel for overnight meetings, if necessary
• Able to crate timelines and share best practices with staff to help maintain efficient operations.
• Flexible and able to manage numerous projects with minimal supervision
• Ability to work with different NARUC departments and perform tasks as needed
