Advisor for Congressional Affairs

The Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C., is seeking a qualified candidate for a permanent position (full-time) as Advisor for Congressional Affairs beginning in January 2019.

The objective of the position is to liaise with and to manage affairs concerning the U.S. Congress. The candidate will have a dynamic and outgoing personality, is very well-connected on the Hill and has at least 3 years of work experience in the U.S. Congress, either on the staff of a Member or on a committee. A thorough understanding of the legislative process, Congressional procedure and the interaction between Congress and the Executive Branch constitutes a solid basis for this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain a dense and wide network of contacts with members of Congress and their staffs on matters of interest to the Embassy of Switzerland
• Advise and assist the Embassy of Switzerland on all matters concerning Congress
• Track and report on important legislative developments in all policy areas relevant to the Embassy of Switzerland
• Manage and enhance relations with the “Friends of Switzerland Caucus” in both the House and the Senate
• Create, manage and oversee various activities and events, both on the Hill and at the Embassy of Switzerland, which serve as the annual program for the Swiss Caucus
• Provide advice and guidance on CODEL (Congressional Delegation) and Staff Delegation trips to Switzerland
• Write reports on relevant developments emanating from Congress

• Extensive knowledge of the D.C. area and its political landscape; ease at networking
• At least 3 years of employment experience in the U.S. Congress
• Bachelor’s degree or higher
• Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in English
• Willingness to sometimes work evenings and/or weekends (as needed)
• Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, as well as database experience
• Interpersonal skills to solve problems and communicate between stakeholders
• Teamwork mentality and ability to work toward achieving objectives
• Knowledge of German or French is an advantage, but not required
