The Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, DC is seeking a qualified candidate for a 100% permanent position as Director of Communications and Public Diplomacy, starting in late fall 2019.

The objective of the position is to manage the Embassy’s communications and public diplomacy activities in a dynamic, fast-moving and challenging environment with the goal of providing information on and promoting Switzerland in the United States. This position oversees a communications team of 2 and a project management team of 4 staff members.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in both communications and project management in the United States and will be eager to rapidly familiarize herself/himself with the political, economic and social landscape of Switzerland. Applicants should have a proven track record of developing and placing content in media channels and of challenging conventional wisdom in communications techniques. Applicants should be fluent in written and spoken English. Preference will be given to those candidates who have a relationship with Switzerland and speak or understand one of the three Swiss official languages (German, French, Italian).

Duties and Responsibilities:
•  Manage and oversee the communications, media and project management team to reach goals in the Embassy’s communications, media and public diplomacy outreach / activities. 

•  Develop content ideas for management, and pitch these to media outlets to enhance the public relations image of Switzerland. 

•  Maintain and deepen the Embassy’s media contacts with U.S.-based journalists and Swiss correspondents and with contacts in the relevant communication offices in the Swiss Federal Administration. 

•  Strategize outreach and communication plans using traditional press releases, social media and press conferences. 

•  Respond to media requests and act as the Embassy’s spokesperson. 

•  Manage, update and develop content for the Embassy’s website and social media platforms. 

•  Monitor the U.S. media with regard to topics relevant for the Embassy and for Switzerland, 
and report to the Ambassador and other stakeholders appropriately. 

•  Develop, distribute and maintain printed and electronic informational publications of the 

•  Take responsibility for the implementation of the Embassy’s public diplomacy and culture 

•  Negotiate with and report to Presence Switzerland, the Swiss Government’s public 
diplomacy agency, which funds and develops outreach abroad. 

•  Identify opportunities to advance Swiss cultural projects in the Washington D.C. area and 
implement them accordingly. 

Requirements: (Please do not apply if you do not meet all requirements listed below) 

•  At least 5 years of verifiable experience in the fields of public relations, communications, journalism and / or marketing, or a combination of experience in these fields. 

•  Superior knowledge of media practices, as well as a proven track record of garnering top- tier coverage in print and digital media 

•  Ability to successfully and strategically pitch and place news stories and develop brand features in the media 

•  Experience in managing a team of professionals 

•  Top quality English language skills (written and spoken). 

•  Fluency in one of the official languages of Switzerland with passive knowledge of another is 
preferred, but not required. 

•  Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing 
or a related field. 

•  Knowledge of Switzerland in general and its media and public diplomacy landscape is 

•  Ability to work and attend evening and weekend activities, as well as to thrive in a fast-paced, 

deadline-oriented atmosphere.
•  Excellent organizational skills. 

•  Extensive experience with social media tools like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram 
and the ability and desire to learn new communication tools. Full computer literacy with Microsoft Office.
