BBB National Programs is the home of industry self-regulatory and dispute resolution programs that include the National Advertising Division (NAD), National Advertising Review Board (NARB), BBB EU Privacy Shield, BBB AUTO LINE, Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU), Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI), Children’s Confection Advertising Initiative (CCAI), Direct Selling Self-Regulatory Council (DSSRC), Digital Advertising Accountability Program (Accountability Program), and the Coalition for Better Advertising Dispute Resolution Program (CBA DRM). 

We are looking for a Press Officer to join BBB National Programs’ Marketing and Communications Team. Engaging with the press and securing earned media are key components of this position. The Press Officer will play a critical role in BBB National Programs’ overall marketing and communications strategy, ensuring strong public understanding of BBB National Programs’ work and elevating the brand and shaping our message.

The chosen candidate will have a proven track-record securing earned media. The Press Officer will be responsible for leading the development of BBB National Programs’ media strategy and tactics, maintaining and strengthening relationships with journalists and stakeholders, and deliver media monitoring reports and support to the executive team. The Press Officer will report to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and work closely with other members of marketing, communications, and BBB National Programs’ teams.

The Press Officer will be based in Arlington, VA.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and manage a calendar of BBB National Programs’ external announcements, highlighting all media activity;
  • Serve as primary liaison between media relations and the BBB National Programs and ensure organizational collaboration;
  • Understand and have the ability to analyze BBB National Programs’ risk issues and to develop strategies and programs to help mitigate and ensure accurate communications with the media around these issues;
  • Effectively manage media management tools to track and monitor relevant BBB National Programs media coverage (including on social media) and provide timely and reliable analysis to leadership, – at times – outside of typical working hours;
  • Manage proactive and reactive media relations initiatives, including cultivating new relationships with journalists and opinion writers from major media outlets.
  • Address questions and inquiries from the press.
  • Develop media-related materials, including op-eds, press releases, fact sheets, pitches, talking points;
  • Assist in the planning and overseeing of BBB National Programs’ press events (annual conferences, media/journalist roundtables and press conferences).
  • Develop and proactively pitch story ideas for the organization and senior leadership, securing media interview opportunities and managing the interview process, including message development, pre-interviews, and interview training;
  • Coordinate/develop issue briefs and research materials for major BBB National Programs flagship events (e.g. CARU conference, NAD conference, and Hot Topics roadshow).

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or Journalism with 8 or more years’ experience in media relations, public affairs, or other related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in securing earned media with traditional press and industry trade publications.
  • Organizational leader who thinks “big picture” with strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills while effectively maintaining a pulse on details.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and research skills and an ability to quickly produce quality, engaging, and crisp documents and presentations.
  • Strong knowledge of Cision software and other media monitoring tools, digital, and social media.
  • Experience in planning and managing a media relations content calendar.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting to and interacting with members of the media, executive leaders, and a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders;
  • Experience working with top-tier media on high-profile and or sensitive issues.
  • Ability to think strategically and rapidly synthesize information from varied sources into concise conclusions and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated willingness to assist others and perform whatever tasks are necessary to help the team achieve its goals.
