Assistant Director, Communications (full time)


The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) is currently seeking an Assistant Director, Communications specifically to strengthen our digital outreach and engagement efforts. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who is whip smart in online communications strategy, adept in lucid writing, and an ace at efficiently managing multiple workstreams. The individual right for this role will have a strong commitment to advancing educational equity.

NCTQ believes every child deserves effective teachers and every teacher deserves the opportunity to be effective. Job Summary

The Assistant Director, Communications will be responsible for creating, implementing, and managing online communications activities to advance our mission and objectives.  Additionally, this newly created position will support the Director of Communications in content development across multiple platforms. The Assistant Director will report directly to the Director of Communications.


Core Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction for digital assets
    • o Develop strategies for our digital assets to increase our reach and influence with target audiences, ensuring we have the right mix of assets, channels, and tactics
    • o Develop and manage an online content calendar in coordination with the Director who manages the larger Communications calendar
    • o Assess the effectiveness of online efforts on an ongoing basis and assist in developing internal quarterly analytics reports
    • Assist as a key content creator
    • o Write (from scratch) content to engage and educate audiences across various channels, including newsletters, blogs, graphics, website, social media
    • o Draft press materials -- from press releases to outreach emails 
    • o Manage and monitor integrated email marketing initiatives
    • o Proofread and coordinate production of communications materials
    • Act as NCTQ web wizard
    • o Oversee the development and maintenance of the NCTQ website, including using a data-driven strategic approach to updating website content to encourage audience engagement
    • o Report on key performance metrics, including website traffic and conversions, to effectively evaluate and refine outreach tactics
    • o Implement enhancement initiatives to maximize functionality and usability of the NCTQ website
    • Serve as social media maestro
    • o Manage our social media presence across multiple platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin), including synthesizing complex policy data and analysis into compelling bite-size pieces
    • o Create social sharing toolkits for major releases and manage “day of” social media
    • o Build reciprocal relationships with peer organizations on social platforms
    • Undertake special projects and other duties as assigned


Qualifications and Attributes of a Successful Candidate

    • Education and Experience: 
    • o Bachelor’s degree in education, public policy, marketing, communications, or related field. 
    • o Minimum 4 years of substantial work experience in a communications related role (experience in education policy is desired).
    • Communications/Digital strategy: Proven track record in digital communications, including content creation. Considerable knowledge of digital communications analytics and search engine optimization. Skill in tracking key performance indicators and making data-driven recommendations. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a website and social media platforms to maximize reach. Experience developing and implementing email campaigns using a variety of email services.  
    • Writing skills: Excellent written communication skills are a necessity. Proven ability to synthesize a complicated message with complex data into a simple, compelling narrative across different communications channels (website, social media, e-newsletters, press releases). Superb storytelling skills. 
    • Attitude/Approach: Committed to excellence, and eager to constantly learn and grow. Excellent organizational and project management skills with a high attention to detail. Highly motivated, results oriented, and able to complete tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Ability to stay cool and collaborative under pressure. Belief in NCTQ’s mission.
    • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and email service providers required. Experience in the following a plus: Airtable, Buffer, Canva, Google Ads, Google Analytics, MailChimp, and HTML and/or graphic design.
