Democratic super-PAC uses Billy Crystal to mock Romney’s ‘marvelous’ comment

The commercial comes a day after President Obama similarly needled Romney over his remarks, as Democrats try to turn the plan into a political liability for Republicans.

“He said that he’s ‘very supportive’ of this new budget, and he even called it ‘marvelous,’ ” Obama said while giving a speech on the budget Tuesday. “Which is a word you don’t often hear when it comes to describing a budget — it’s a word you don’t often hear generally.”

{mosads}In the ad, onscreen text detailing Romney’s praise for the budget is occasionally interrupted by clips of Crystal — channeling Lamas — repeating his “marvelous” catchphrase. The soundtrack is provided by Crystal’s “You Look Marvelous,” a 1985 mock-rock single from his comedy album of the same name.

“Marvelous?” onscreen text asks. “The Ryan plan would cause the gradual decline of Medicare and force seniors to pay more for their care.”

American Bridge, the Democratic group that created the ad, said it put it together after the president’s speech Tuesday.

“Paul Ryan’s budget plan would cause the gradual demise of the Medicare system and cost 1 million students their Pell grants while preserving tax breaks for oil companies. And Mitt Romney thinks it’s ‘marvelous’?” American Bridge said in a statement.

Republicans were quick to point out that despite the president’s teasing, Obama himself has used the word “marvelous” on numerous occasions.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom tweeted Tuesday to an article quoting Obama using the phrase to describe first lady Michelle Obama’s accomplishments, the nation of Chile and Martin Luther King Jr.’s oratory.
