On MSNBC’s “The ED Show” Thursday, Boxer said Romney “has nothing in his heart that indicates … that he stands with women.”
{mosads}Boxer was attacking Romney on his abortion-rights stance, saying he doesn’t trust women to make decisions about their own bodies.
“Let me just say right now, this is the moment of truth for Mitt Romney,” Boxer said. “And I think all of America, men and women, will see, all of us will see, that he’s been tap-dancing around this for too long. He is not on the side of women.”
Boxer told Ed Schultz that Romney proved that he didn’t care about women’s issues when he didn’t stand up against his party’s platform in August during the Republican National Convention.
“It went back to the platform, Ed, you’ve discussed it many times,” Boxer said. “The Republican platform said that we’re going to make abortion criminal and we’re not going to protect women who have been raped or the victims of incest. And Mitt Romney never lifted one finger to change it.”
Romney has argued women would be better off under his administration because of Obama’s poor handling of the economy.
While the Obama campaign has emphasized abortion rights and contraception much of the year in an effort to move women against Romney, the Republican has argued women will end up siding with him because of basic pocketbook issues.
Obama has enjoyed a gender gap in polling for much of the year, with a majority of female voters indicating their support for him. But the gap has closed in recent weeks as Romney has surged in the polls following the first debate between the two.
